R Praggnanandhaa Becomes First Indian to Win Norway Chess 2026

Indian Grandmaster R Praggnanandhaa scripted history by becoming the first Indian to win the prestigious Norway Chess tournament on 5 June 2026. The 20-year-old chess prodigy secured the title in Oslo after defeating Germany’s Vincent Keymer in the final round and finishing the tournament with 18 points.

The 2026 edition of Norway Chess featured some of the world’s strongest players, including Magnus Carlsen, D Gukesh, Alireza Firouzja, and Wesley So. Praggnanandhaa delivered an outstanding performance, winning his final four classical games and registering remarkable victories over former World No. 1 Magnus Carlsen and reigning World Champion D Gukesh.

Norway Chess is regarded as one of the most prestigious classical chess tournaments in the world. Praggnanandhaa’s historic triumph marks another major milestone for Indian chess and highlights India’s growing dominance on the global chess stage.
