Philanthropist Sudha Murty Nominated to Rajya Sabha

The President of India, Draupadi Murmu, has nominated philanthropist, educator, author, and social worker Sudha Murty to the Rajya Sabha.

Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi said, “Her presence in the Rajya Sabha is a powerful testament to our ‘Nari Shakti.'”

Modi expressed his joy on X, stating, “I am delighted that the President of India has nominated @SmtSudhaMurty Ji to the Rajya Sabha. Sudha Ji’s contributions to diverse fields, including social work, philanthropy, and education, have been immense and inspiring. Her presence in the Rajya Sabha is a powerful testament to our ‘Nari Shakti,’ exemplifying the strength and potential of women in shaping our nation’s destiny. Wishing her a fruitful Parliamentary tenure.”

Sudha Murty is the first female engineer at TATA:

Sudha Murty was born on August 19, 1950. She started her career in computer science and engineering. she is the first female engineer at TATA Engineering and Locomotive Company. But later she stepped into business.

She was married to Narayana Murthy, the co-founder of Infosys, and she was the chairperson of the Infosys Foundation.

Murty’s son, Rohan Murty, founder of the digital transformation company Soroco, and daughter, Akshata Murty, a fashion designer and venture capitalist, is the wife of UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak.

Sudha Murty recevied prestigious Padma Shri award in 2006 and the Padma Bhushan award in 2023, recognizing her great work in social service.

She has founded many orphanages and she provided computers and library facilities to number of government schools in Karnataka.

Sudha Murty established the Murty Classical Library of India at Harvard University in January 2015.

Responding to the nomination, Sudha Murty expressed her gratitude towards Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

She told posted on her X,sayng, “Thank you, Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri @narendramodi Ji. It is my privilege and honor to be nominated to the Rajya Sabha by our Hon’ble President of India, Smt. Droupadi Murmu Ji @rashtrapatibhvn. I am very grateful for the opportunity to serve our nation.”
