Swami Vivekananda Punyatithi: Honouring the Saint Who Inspired a Nation

Every year, 4th July is observed as the Punyatithi (death anniversary) of Swami Vivekananda, the great spiritual leader, philosopher, and Father of Modern Indian Nationalism. He passed away on this day in 1902 at Belur Math, West Bengal.

Born as Narendranath Datta in 1863, he became a disciple of Ramakrishna Paramhansa and later founded the Ramakrishna Mission in 1897 to promote education, service, and spirituality. His powerful 1893 speech at the Parliament of the World’s Religions in Chicago earned global recognition for Indian philosophy.

He inspired generations with his message of unity, service, and divinity in every soul, and advocated for a strong, educated India. He also outlined four paths to liberationRaja Yoga, Karma Yoga, Jnana Yoga, and Bhakti Yoga.

To honour his ideals and vision for youth, his birth anniversary (January 12) is celebrated annually as National Youth Day in India.

Swami Vivekananda’s teachings continue to guide the youth and society towards spiritual and national awakening.
