Third World Countries in 2026: Is India on the UN’s Least Developed Countries List?

The term “Third World Country” originated during the Cold War to describe nations that remained non-aligned with either the United States-led Western bloc or the Soviet-led Communist bloc. Today, however, the term is considered outdated, and international organizations such as the United Nations (UN) and UNCTAD use the classification Least Developed Countries (LDCs) to identify nations facing significant economic and developmental challenges.

According to the UNCTAD, there are 44 Least Developed Countries (LDCs) in 2026, spread across Africa, Asia, the Pacific, and the Caribbean. Countries are included in this list based on three key criteria: Gross National Income (GNI) per capita, the Human Assets Index (HAI), and the Economic and Environmental Vulnerability Index (EVI).

India is not classified as a Least Developed Country (LDC) and is therefore not considered a “Third World Country” in the modern developmental sense. India is recognized as a developing economy with a diversified industrial base, a rapidly growing digital and manufacturing sector, and membership in major global forums such as the G20, BRICS, and the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO).

While India was historically associated with the “Third World” under the original political definition due to its leadership in the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM), the term is no longer used in official international classifications. Today, India is regarded as one of the world’s fastest-growing major economies and an emerging global power.
