The Nature Environment and Wildlife Society (NEWS) of West Bengal’s Sundarbans has received Global Technical Recognition from the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) for its innovative Sustainable Aquaculture in Mangrove Ecosystems (SAIME) model. The honour was announced on 15 October 2025 during the FAO’s 80th Anniversary Celebrations and the World Food Forum in Rome, Italy.
The SAIME model integrates shrimp aquaculture with mangrove conservation, promoting both environmental sustainability and rural livelihoods. It maintains 5%–30% mangrove cover in shrimp ponds, supporting ecological balance while boosting farmers’ income. Implemented across 30 hectares by 42 fish farmers in North and South 24 Parganas, the initiative has more than doubled farmers’ annual net profits through cost savings and eco-friendly practices.
By involving local communities and encouraging collective responsibility, SAIME enhances climate resilience, combats sea-level rise, and promotes chemical-free shrimp farming. It also strengthens carbon sequestration through mangrove preservation, contributing to global climate mitigation efforts.
Recognised globally, the SAIME model offers a replicable solution for sustainable aquaculture in mangrove regions worldwide, aligning economic development with environmental stewardship.
