What Is Mission Sehat? India’s New Health, Nutrition and Agriculture Initiative Explained

India has launched the “Sehat Mission” on 11 May 2026 in New Delhi under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The initiative aims to build a healthier future by integrating agriculture, nutrition, and healthcare into a unified national framework focused on holistic well-being.

The Sehat Mission, which stands for “Science Excellence for Health through Agricultural Transformation,” is a joint initiative of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research and the Indian Council of Medical Research. The mission seeks to establish a direct connection between agricultural production and public health outcomes.

The programme focuses on preventive healthcare, improved nutrition, and evidence-based scientific solutions rather than only treating diseases after they occur. Union Health Minister Jagat Prakash Nadda stated that the mission represents a shift from a reactive healthcare system to a proactive health model.

India currently faces major challenges such as malnutrition, micronutrient deficiencies, and the growing burden of non-communicable diseases like diabetes, hypertension, and cancer. The Sehat Mission aims to address these concerns through nutrient-rich food production, balanced dietary practices, and closer coordination between agricultural and medical research.

Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan described the initiative as a historic policy shift linking farming with health outcomes. The mission also promotes traditional dietary principles such as “Hitbhuk, Mitbhuk, Ritubhok,” which emphasize healthy, moderate, and seasonal eating habits.

The Sehat Mission is being viewed as an important step toward building a nutrition-focused and preventive healthcare ecosystem in India.
