DRI’s Operation Fire Trail Busts 100+ Tonnes of Illegal Chinese Firecrackers

In a significant crackdown on illegal imports, the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) has launched Operation Fire Trail, a special intelligence-led enforcement operation targeting the illicit smuggling of Chinese firecrackers into India. The operation aims to curb environmental, legal, and public safety risks posed by these banned imports.

Operation Fire Trail is a targeted anti-smuggling initiative led by the DRI, India’s premier enforcement agency under the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC). The operation was launched to detect, intercept, and prosecute those involved in the unauthorized import of firecrackers, particularly those containing hazardous chemicals.

  • Detect illegal import and distribution of restricted explosives.
  • Prevent misuse of Special Economic Zones (SEZs) for unauthorized diversion into the Domestic Tariff Area (DTA).
  • Enforce compliance with India’s Foreign Trade Policy and Explosive Rules, 2008.
  • 100 metric tonnes of Chinese firecrackers were seized at multiple Indian ports.
  • The banned explosives were misdeclared as decorative items like “Mini Decorative Plants” and “Artificial Flowers.”
  • The DRI uncovered a fraudulent SEZ operation involving a KASEZ-based unit and the use of fake IEC (Import Export Code) holders to divert the goods into Indian markets.

The confiscated firecrackers were found to contain banned toxic chemicals such as lithium, red lead, and copper oxide, which are harmful to both health and the environment. These chemicals are also prone to causing explosions, posing a major safety risk at storage sites and during transportation.

A key suspect in the operation has been arrested and remanded to judicial custody, sending a strong legal message to others involved in similar illegal activities. The DRI has emphasized its continued vigilance in enforcing laws related to hazardous materials and trade violations.

The operation plays a crucial role in:

  • Safeguarding public health from toxic pollutants.
  • Protecting port infrastructure from accidental explosions.
  • Maintaining integrity in trade by enforcing the ITC (HS) Policy, which restricts firework imports without proper authorization from DGFT and PESO.

With Operation Fire Trail, the DRI has reinforced its commitment to protecting India’s borders from hazardous imports and ensuring that trade remains safe, legal, and environmentally compliant. As the festive season approaches, this operation serves as a timely reminder of the dangers of illegal firecracker trade and the importance of robust enforcement.
