India continued its impressive ascent in international mathematics by securing 7th place at the 66th International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) 2025, held in Sunshine Coast, Australia. Competing against 110 countries, the Indian team achieved a national record score of 193 out of 252, winning three gold, two silver, and one bronze medal.
The Indian delegation included Kanav Talwar, Aarav Gupta, and Adhitya Mangudy (Gold), Abel George Mathew and Aadish Jain (Silver), and Archit Manas (Bronze). This marks only the second time India has earned three golds—matching its 1998 record—and the third time it has ranked 7th overall.
India’s consistent progress in recent years, especially from 2019 to 2025, highlights the nation’s growing strength in STEM education. Notably, nine of India’s 12 gold medals in the last decade were achieved between 2023 and 2025 alone.
The success underscores the critical role of the Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education (HBCSE) under TIFR, which manages the rigorous selection and training of students through national-level exams such as the PRMO, RMO, and INMO. The 2025 team was mentored by Prof. Shanta Laishram (ISI Delhi) and Dr. Mainak Ghosh (ISI Bengaluru).
India’s stellar showing at IMO 2025 reaffirms its position as a global rising star in mathematical talent and education.
