India Launches First National Biofoundry Network to Boost $300 Billion Bioeconomy Goal

India has launched its first National Biofoundry Network (NBN) under the BioE3 Policy (Economy, Environment, Employment), unveiled by Union Science & Technology Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh. The initiative marks a key step toward achieving India’s $300 billion bioeconomy target by 2030, positioning the country as a global leader in sustainable biotechnology.

The NBN brings together six premier biotechnology institutions into a single collaborative platform to translate biotech research into market-ready solutions. It will focus on advanced biomanufacturing, synthetic biology, gene editing, green biotechnology, and climate-smart agriculture.

Key features include an end-to-end ecosystem for design, prototyping, testing, and scaling up biotech products. The network also promotes start-ups, youth-driven innovation, global collaborations, and sustainability-focused solutions aligned with India’s climate goals.

With strong emphasis on employment generation, indigenous manufacturing, and international partnerships, the NBN is set to accelerate innovation while reinforcing India’s role as a global hub for sustainable biotech.
