Jyotirao Govindravphule was a prominent social reformer in Maharashtra, born on April 11, 1827.
Phule married Savitribai of lower castes at an early age in Pune in 1848. This bold move ushered in another period of social change in the colonial era Three schools were established all of which closed in 1857 due to money for lack of The Rebellion of 1858.
Phule was greatly influenced by Thomas Paine’s book “The Rights of Man” and realized the importance of empowering women and marginalized groups like Dalits to achieve social justice
He wrote 16 books:
