India is set to launch a National Aviation Safety Centre to enhance air safety amid rapid growth in air traffic and airport infrastructure. The initiative was unveiled at the Asia-Pacific Accident Investigation Group (APAC-AIG) meeting in New Delhi, marking a significant milestone in India’s aviation modernization drive.
Enhancing India’s Aviation Safety Ecosystem
Union Civil Aviation Secretary Samir Kumar Sinha announced that the new centre will focus on capacity building, institutional reform, and international collaboration. It aims to strengthen regulatory oversight and improve coordination among aviation bodies as India’s civil aviation sector scales up to meet rising passenger demand.
Expanding DGCA and AAIB Workforce
To meet growing safety oversight needs, the government plans to double the workforce of both the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) and the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB). This expansion will be supported by the Bharatiya Vayuyan Adhiniyam, 2024, which replaces older aviation laws to provide a modern, efficient regulatory framework.
Global Alignment and Skill Development
In line with International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) standards, USOAP auditor training courses will be introduced at the Rajiv Gandhi National Aviation University (RGNAU) to build domestic auditing expertise. India has also offered its aviation laboratories for defect analysis and knowledge sharing with other Asia-Pacific member states.

India’s Rising Global Rank and Vision Ahead
Civil Aviation Minister Rammohan Naidu announced that India’s global safety oversight rank improved dramatically from 112th to 55th. With plans to expand its airport network to 350–400 airports by 2047, the new National Aviation Safety Centre will ensure that India’s aviation growth is matched by world-class safety standards, keeping Indian skies safe, modern, and globally trusted.
