India Launches GIRG Initiative to Benchmark Performance Across 26 Global Indices

The Government of India has launched a large-scale initiative to assess the country’s performance across 26 major global indices, aiming to pinpoint areas for policy improvement and strengthen India’s standing in international rankings. The announcement was made in Parliament by Rao Inderjit Singh, Minister of State for Statistics and Programme Implementation.

The review is being conducted under the Global Indices for Reforms and Growth (GIRG) platform, which uses global comparisons to guide governance reforms, enhance data quality, and drive evidence-based policymaking.

The 26 indices are grouped into four key themes — Economy, Development, Governance, and Industry — with each index assigned to a specific ministry responsible for validating data, examining methodologies, and ensuring India’s official statistics are correctly represented.

Central coordination will be handled by the Development Monitoring and Evaluation Office (DMEO) at NITI Aayog, ensuring consistent data reporting and methodological accuracy across ministries.

A major focus of the initiative is to scrutinize the methodologies used by international agencies, especially for indices such as the Democracy Index, where India is ranked 41st and has previously raised concerns about transparency and bias. The Ministry of Law and Justice will lead this review.

By aligning national data with global standards and improving representation in international rankings, India aims to strengthen its global credibility and use insights from these indices to drive long-term reforms.
