The Andhra Pradesh government is set to launch the ‘Divyang Shakti’ scheme on March 18, providing free bus travel for differently-abled persons across the state. The initiative will be inaugurated by Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu in Amaravati, marking a significant step toward inclusive welfare.
Under the scheme, individuals with 40% or more disability can travel free of cost in services operated by the Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (APSRTC). This includes city ordinary, metro express, Palle Velugu, Ultra-Palle Velugu, and express buses, covering nearly 73% of the APSRTC fleet (7,264 buses).
The scheme also offers a 50% fare concession for attendants, easing travel for those requiring assistance. Notably, the coverage has been expanded from just four to 21 categories of disabilities, including autism, neurological disorders, Parkinson’s disease, thalassemia, haemophilia, and sickle cell disease.
With this expansion, the number of beneficiaries is expected to rise significantly from 2.05 lakh to 12.76 lakh. The government will bear an estimated annual cost of ₹207 crore to implement the initiative.
To improve accessibility, digital passes with QR codes will be issued via the Mana Mitra WhatsApp Governance platform and APSRTC mobile app, along with services at 134 bus station counters. The scheme aims to enhance mobility, accessibility, and social inclusion, empowering differently-abled persons with better access to education, employment, and essential services.
