CBI Launches ‘Abhay’ AI Chatbot to Combat Online Scams in India

By Soniya:

India has taken a major step toward strengthening cyber safety with the launch of an AI-powered chatbot named ‘Abhay’ by the Central Bureau of Investigation. Designed to combat the rising threat of online fraud, the tool enables citizens to verify the authenticity of official notices and avoid falling victim to digital scams.

The initiative comes amid a surge in so-called “digital arrest” scams, where fraudsters impersonate law enforcement officials and use fake notices to intimidate victims into transferring money. By offering instant verification, Abhay acts as a first line of defence, helping users distinguish between genuine and fraudulent communications.

The chatbot is being unveiled by Justice Surya Kant during the 22nd D.P. Kohli Memorial Lecture, an event that highlights evolving challenges in policing and justice. The launch underscores the growing role of artificial intelligence in modern law enforcement, particularly in areas such as fraud detection, citizen engagement and cybercrime prevention.

With tools like Abhay, authorities aim to build public trust while equipping citizens with accessible technology to protect themselves in an increasingly digital world.
