India has achieved a significant breakthrough in domestic energy exploration after Oil India Limited successfully discovered a new natural gas-bearing zone in Rajasthan’s Dandewala field. The announcement was made by Hardeep Singh Puri, who described the discovery as an important step toward strengthening India’s energy security and reducing dependence on imported fuel.
The newly identified gas reserves were found in the shallower Sanu Formation within the hydrocarbon-rich Rajasthan sedimentary basin. The Dandewala field, located in Rajasthan, is already known for oil and gas potential, but this latest discovery expands opportunities for domestic natural gas production.
India currently imports more than 85% of its crude oil and nearly half of its natural gas requirements. This heavy dependence exposes the country to global energy price volatility, geopolitical tensions, and supply disruptions. The new gas discovery is expected to support India’s long-term goal of energy self-reliance and help strengthen domestic supply chains.
Oil India Limited has been actively investing in hydrocarbon exploration, advanced drilling technologies, and resource expansion across multiple sedimentary basins. The discovery in Dandewala highlights the growing importance of domestic exploration efforts as India works toward improving energy resilience and reducing import dependency amid global energy uncertainties.
