Prime Minister Narendra Modi showcased India’s rich tribal heritage and indigenous craftsmanship through culturally significant diplomatic gifts presented to world leaders during recent international engagements. The initiative highlighted India’s growing use of cultural diplomacy and soft power on the global stage.
Among the most notable gifts was a traditional Gond painting from Madhya Pradesh presented to Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden. Gond art, created by one of India’s largest tribal communities, is known for its vibrant storytelling patterns and deep connection with nature and indigenous traditions.
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni received two culturally important textile gifts from Northeast India — Assam’s prestigious Muga Silk stole and a Shirui Lily-inspired stole crafted by the Tangkhul Naga community of Manipur. Muga Silk is globally recognized for its natural golden sheen and GI-tag status, while the Shirui Lily design celebrates Manipur’s rare state flower and tribal weaving traditions.
Another symbolic gift was Chak-Hao, the traditional black rice of Manipur, presented to the Queen Mother of the UAE. The heritage grain, cultivated by tribal communities in Northeast India, is valued for its nutritional richness, antioxidant properties, and cultural significance.
These diplomatic gestures reflect India’s broader effort to promote tribal art, indigenous textiles, traditional food heritage, and regional craftsmanship internationally while strengthening cultural identity through global diplomacy.
