Centre Temporarily Restricts Telegram Access Ahead of NEET UG 2026 Re-Examination

By Soniya:

The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has temporarily restricted access to the Telegram messaging platform across India until June 22, 2026, ahead of the NEET (UG) 2026 re-examination scheduled for June 21. The move aims to safeguard the integrity of the examination and prevent the circulation of unauthorized exam-related content.

According to officials, concerns were raised that Telegram channels and groups could be used to share alleged question papers, answer keys, or misleading information that might compromise the fairness of the examination process. The National Testing Agency (NTA) welcomed the decision, stating that it would help create a secure and transparent testing environment for candidates.

The restriction has been imposed under Section 69A of the Information Technology Act, 2000, which empowers the Central Government to block public access to online information under specific circumstances related to public order, security, and other legal considerations.

In addition to limiting platform access, authorities have reportedly directed Telegram to temporarily disable the message-editing feature for existing posts in India until June 30, 2026. This measure is intended to prevent the alteration of messages that could later be used to spread misinformation or create false claims regarding examination paper leaks.

The temporary action reflects the government’s broader efforts to ensure fair conduct of national-level examinations and maintain public confidence in the examination system. The restriction is expected to remain in effect only for the limited period surrounding the re-examination process.
