Hemis Festival 2026: Celebrating Guru Padmasambhava and Ladakh’s Buddhist Heritage

The Hemis Festival 2026, celebrated on 24–25 June at the historic Hemis Monastery in Leh, Ladakh, is one of India’s most important Buddhist festivals. Dedicated to Guru Padmasambhava (Guru Rinpoche), revered as the “Second Buddha,” the festival commemorates his birth anniversary and his pivotal role in spreading Vajrayana Buddhism across Tibet and the Himalayan region.

The two-day celebration features vibrant Cham masked dances, traditional Buddhist music, sacred rituals, prayers, and cultural performances by monks of the Drukpa Kagyu tradition. These rituals symbolize the triumph of wisdom, compassion, and virtue over ignorance and evil, while preserving Ladakh’s rich spiritual and cultural heritage.

A major attraction of the festival is the colorful Cham dance, where monks dressed in elaborate costumes and masks portray deities and guardian spirits. During special 12-year intervals, a giant sacred Thangka of Guru Padmasambhava is also displayed for devotees, drawing thousands of pilgrims and tourists.

Held at the renowned Hemis Monastery, about 45 km from Leh, the festival not only strengthens Buddhist traditions but also promotes cultural tourism in Ladakh. By bringing together devotees, monks, and visitors from around the world, the Hemis Festival showcases the region’s unique heritage, spiritual values, and vibrant cultural identity.
