The Government of India has introduced the e-OCI Card, a digital version of the Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) card that allows eligible cardholders to securely store and access their OCI documents on their smartphones. The initiative aims to make international travel more convenient while supporting India’s Digital India vision.
Existing OCI cardholders can download the e-OCI Card through the official OCI Services Portal and use it for identity verification during travel. The digital card can be presented to immigration authorities, airline staff, and other officials whenever proof of OCI status is required. However, the government has clarified that the physical OCI booklet remains fully valid, and the e-OCI Card is an optional digital convenience.
The new facility eliminates the need to carry the physical OCI booklet on every journey, reducing the risk of loss and enabling quicker access to travel documents. It also offers benefits such as instant availability on mobile devices, faster verification, and greater convenience for families and frequent travelers.
To generate the e-OCI Card, users must have a valid OCI card, access to the OCI Services Portal, and login credentials linked to their original OCI application. The launch marks another step toward expanding digital public services and improving the travel experience for millions of Overseas Citizens of India living across the world.
