India successfully concluded the Kimberley Process Intersessional Meeting 2026 in Mumbai under its chairship, marking an important step in strengthening transparency and responsible sourcing in the global natural diamond industry. The event was led by Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal and witnessed participation from governments, industry leaders, and civil society organizations from around the world.
The Kimberley Process (KP) is an international initiative launched in 2000 to prevent conflict diamonds from entering global markets. Through the Kimberley Process Certification Scheme (KPCS), participating countries work together to ensure diamonds are ethically sourced and traded responsibly.
The Mumbai intersessional meeting focused on improving governance, monitoring systems, compliance mechanisms, and transparency across the diamond supply chain. Discussions also highlighted the importance of supporting artisanal mining communities and maintaining consumer trust in the global diamond market.
India’s chairship was guided by its “3C Vision” — Credibility, Compliance, and Consumer Confidence. Officials emphasized that diamonds should continue to represent trust, ethical sourcing, and responsible trade practices in an increasingly conscious global market.
As one of the world’s largest diamond processing and trading hubs, India’s leadership in the Kimberley Process is being viewed as significant for the future of the natural diamond sector. Experts believe stronger international cooperation and transparent certification systems will play a key role in protecting the industry from illegal trade and conflict-linked supply chains.
