India Launches Awiqli, World’s First Once-Weekly Basal Insulin for Diabetes Treatment

India has launched Awiqli, the world’s first once-weekly basal insulin, offering a new treatment option for adults living with Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes. Developed by Danish pharmaceutical company Novo Nordisk, the drug contains insulin icodec and was introduced in India on 9 July 2026.

Unlike traditional basal insulin that requires daily injections (365 per year), Awiqli needs just one injection every week, reducing the annual number of injections to 52. The insulin icodec molecule binds to the blood protein albumin, allowing it to remain effective for up to seven days and helping maintain stable blood glucose levels.

The medication is available in a FlexTouch pen and is priced at ₹2,611 for a 700-unit pack, with a per-unit cost reportedly 30–40% lower than many existing daily insulin options.

India becomes the seventh country to introduce Awiqli. Clinical studies have shown that the once-weekly insulin provides blood sugar control comparable to or better than daily basal insulin, although some Type 1 diabetes patients may face a higher risk of hypoglycaemia (low blood sugar).

The launch marks a significant advancement in diabetes care by improving treatment convenience and potentially enhancing long-term patient adherence.
