India Launches First MLFF Barrier-Free Toll System on NH-48 in Gujarat

India has introduced its first barrier-free toll collection system using Multi-Lane Free Flow (MLFF) technology on the Surat–Bharuch stretch of NH-48 in Gujarat. Implemented by the National Highways Authority of India at the Chorayasi Toll Plaza, the system allows vehicles to pass without stopping, marking a major shift toward smart and seamless highway travel. On its first day, over 41,500 vehicles crossed the toll point without halting.

The MLFF system replaces traditional toll booths with fully automated, contactless tolling. It uses Automatic Number Plate Recognition and FASTag to identify vehicles and deduct toll charges directly from linked accounts. This ensures uninterrupted movement and reduces congestion on busy highways.

The new system is expected to significantly cut travel time, improve fuel efficiency, and reduce vehicular emissions. It also enhances transparency in toll collection and aligns with India’s push toward digital and green infrastructure.

To ensure compliance, NHAI has introduced an e-notice system. Vehicles with insufficient FASTag balance or invalid tags will receive electronic notices, requiring payment within 72 hours. Failure to comply may result in penalties, double toll charges, or even FASTag blacklisting.

The MLFF rollout is being seen as a pilot project that could transform toll collection across India, paving the way for faster, technology-driven highway infrastructure.
