India has taken a major step toward simplifying the upcoming census by launching a nationwide toll-free helpline, 1855, to assist citizens in the Census 2027 process. Announced by the Office of the Registrar General and Census Commissioner of India, the helpline is now operational across all states and Union Territories.
The service is designed to guide citizens through house listing, housing census procedures, and participation methods. With multilingual support, it aims to ensure that people from diverse linguistic and regional backgrounds can take part in the census accurately and without confusion.
The helpline reflects a citizen-centric approach, helping reduce errors in data collection while improving accessibility and transparency. It is especially beneficial for individuals in rural and remote areas, where awareness and clarity about census procedures may be limited.
Census 2027 also marks a shift toward digital data collection. For the first time, enumerators will use smartphone-based applications, and citizens will have the option of self-enumeration through an online portal. This digital transformation is expected to enhance efficiency, accuracy, and real-time monitoring.
The census will be conducted in two phases: the Houselisting and Housing Census from April to September 2026, followed by Population Enumeration in February 2027. Together, these efforts aim to create a more inclusive, modern, and reliable national data system.
