The Department of Posts has launched a drone-based mail transmission service in Himachal Pradesh, marking a major step toward modernizing postal operations in remote and mountainous regions. The service connects Mandi Head Post Office with Rehardhar Branch Post Office, significantly improving the speed and efficiency of mail delivery.
Announced by Union Minister for Communications and DoNER, Jyotiraditya M. Scindia, the initiative began operations on June 12, 2026. The project aims to overcome geographical challenges and strengthen postal connectivity in difficult terrains.
One of the key achievements of the service is the drastic reduction in delivery time. While traditional transportation methods took more than two hours to cover the 12-kilometer route between Mandi and Rehardhar, drones can now complete the journey in just seven minutes.
Encouraged by the success of the pilot route, the Department of Posts plans to expand drone-based mail services to nearly 150 routes across Himachal Pradesh and Assam in the coming months. The initiative is expected to improve access to postal services, government documents, financial services, and parcel deliveries in remote communities.
The use of drones will not only enhance operational efficiency and real-time tracking but also support sustainable logistics by reducing dependence on conventional transport. This innovative step highlights India’s growing adoption of advanced technologies to improve public service delivery and promote inclusive development.
