India’s First Wooden Gurdwara Built in Fazilka, Punjab: A Unique Blend of Faith and Architecture

In a remarkable blend of faith, architecture, and service, India’s first wooden Gurdwara — Sri Nanak Niwas — has been built inside the police lines of Fazilka, Punjab. Constructed entirely from imported Finnish Deodhar wood, this 40×40 ft shrine is the vision of SSP Bhupinder Singh Sidhu, who turned personal devotion into a lasting legacy.

Inaugurated in February 2023, the Gurdwara features four open entrances, aligned beams, ventilated domes, and traditional Sikh architecture, symbolizing inclusivity and humility. It offers daily prayers, Sunday congregations, and regular services like Akhand Path Sahib and Anand Karaj. Designed by Ludhiana-based carpenter Iqbal Singh, the Gurdwara stands as a spiritual and architectural marvel, drawing devotees from across India and abroad.

A true symbol of seva and innovation, Sri Nanak Niwas not only enriches local religious tourism but also sets an inspiring example of how individual faith can transform community spaces.
