Narendra Modi Becomes India’s Longest Continuously Serving Elected Prime Minister

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has achieved a historic milestone by becoming India’s longest continuously serving elected Prime Minister. On June 10, 2026, he completed 4,399 uninterrupted days in office, surpassing the previous record of 4,398 days held by India’s first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru.

Narendra Modi first assumed office on May 26, 2014, after leading the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to a decisive victory in the Lok Sabha elections. Since then, he has secured three consecutive electoral victories in 2014, 2019, and 2024, becoming the first non-Congress Prime Minister to complete two full majority terms and the first since Nehru to win three successive Lok Sabha elections as the incumbent leader.

The milestone adds to a series of records achieved by Modi during his political career. In 2025, he surpassed Indira Gandhi’s record for the longest uninterrupted tenure as Prime Minister, and earlier in 2026, he became India’s longest-serving elected head of government by combining his tenure as Gujarat Chief Minister and Prime Minister.

While Modi now holds the record for the longest continuously serving elected Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru remains India’s longest-serving Prime Minister overall, having served for 6,131 days from August 15, 1947, until May 27, 1964.

The achievement highlights Prime Minister Modi’s sustained electoral success, political longevity, and significant influence on India’s governance over the past decade.
