RBI Launches Mission SAKSHAM to Strengthen Urban Cooperative Banks

By Soniya:

The Reserve Bank of India has launched Mission SAKSHAM, a nationwide capacity-building programme aimed at strengthening Urban Cooperative Banks (UCBs). The initiative focuses on improving governance, resilience, and professional standards while modernising the cooperative banking sector.

Mission SAKSHAM is designed as a large-scale training effort covering nearly 1.4 lakh participants across India through both physical and digital modules. It targets key stakeholders including board members, senior management, compliance officers, auditors, IT staff, and other banking professionals.

The programme aims to enhance managerial capabilities, strengthen compliance culture, and build institutional resilience. By doing so, the RBI intends to create more efficient and professionally managed cooperative banks that can meet evolving financial and regulatory demands.

Developed in collaboration with sector bodies such as the National Urban Cooperative Finance and Development Corporation, the initiative reflects a collective approach to addressing sector-specific challenges. It also promotes continuous learning to help UCBs adapt to technological advancements and regulatory changes.

Mission SAKSHAM aligns with RBI’s long-term vision of transforming cooperative banks into robust, technology-driven institutions while preserving their community-focused nature and strengthening depositor trust.
