This Ugadi ‘Transform relationships into Connections’

Here’s a poem, inspired by the motely flavours of Ugadi Pachadi by Jhilam Chattaraj.

Ugadi Pachadi

We wait for winds
to curl
our cup of sourness.
Tamarind tales — sweetened
by jaggery,
exhale the simmering
breath of summer.
Marriage
is like a raw mango —
a surprise turn of senses,
a fallen
Margosa blossom, weeping
on the night we worship
the moon,
yet refuse the flourish of her nectar.
We harden into pepper corns,
fingers — furious,
tap on the soundless
heat of agitation.
Our voice
breaks into salt— white, grainy, fearful.
Years go by — we lose —
hair, money, words.
All that is solid
slowly, melts into water.
We become
the resonance of rivers
singing between distances,
and swallow
a pitcher full of antique gold —
a predictable swirl
of bright
and bitter sentences.

Everyone is excited about Ugadi, the Telugu New Year. On March 22nd dressed in new clothes, we shall offer prayers, perform cultural rituals, relish delicious food and spend the day with our loved ones. Ugadi is also special, because of Ugadi Pachadi — a signature translucent drink, comprising six different tastes. It is a blend of raw mango, tamarind, neem flowers, jaggery, salt, green chilies and water. Popularly, it is believed that Ugadi Pachadi represents the different emotions of life; happiness, grief, anger, disgust, fear and surprise.

All our relationships seem to be a sum of these emotions; especially marriage. Over the years, for good or bad, any one of these passions influences the bond between a man and woman. The marriage either continues or ends or continues with certain disclaimers. We do not know, but what we know, is that a relationship cannot survive without consistent efforts to show that the other person matters.

To transform a ‘relationship’ into a ‘connection,’ it must be showered with attention because ‘attention’ as French Philosopher,  Simone Weil said, is the ‘rarest and purest form of generosity.’ So, this Ugadi, let’s cherish the people around us. Let’s face the crossroads of connections with empathy and thoughtfulness.
