Nepal Waives Climbing Fees for 97 Peaks to Boost Adventure Tourism

In a major push to promote its lesser-known mountain regions, Nepal has announced that climbers can scale 97 Himalayan peaks free of charge for the next two years. The Tourism Department’s initiative aims to draw adventure seekers to unexplored areas, particularly in the underdeveloped Karnali and Sudurpaschim provinces, while boosting local economies.

The selected peaks range from 5,970m to 7,132m and remain largely untouched compared to popular destinations like Everest and Annapurna. By waiving permit fees until 2027, the government hopes to spread tourism benefits beyond traditional hotspots, generate employment in guiding and hospitality, and showcase Nepal’s hidden natural treasures.

Although the fee exemption may cut short-term revenue from permits, officials expect increased visitor numbers to drive growth in accommodation, transport, and mountaineering services—offering both economic and social upliftment to remote Himalayan communities.
