FSSAI Bans Use of ‘ORS’ on Food Labels and Advertisements
The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has banned the use of the term ‘ORS’ (Oral Rehydration Solution) on food product labels and advertisements, stating that its use misleads consumers. The regulator has directed all food business operators to comply with the order immediately, warning that violations will be treated as misbranding under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006.
The FSSAI’s latest directive follows a review which found that several food products were using the term ‘ORS’ to imply medical or therapeutic properties. The authority clarified that ‘ORS’ refers specifically to a medically formulated solution approved by health authorities and cannot be used in food or beverage branding.
Earlier permissions granted in July 2022 and February 2024, which allowed the use of ‘ORS’ with disclaimers, have now been withdrawn. Any food product continuing to use the term will face regulatory action.
The FSSAI, under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, is responsible for ensuring safe and accurate food labelling in India. The decision aims to prevent consumer deception and protect public health.
