Armenia has unveiled the official logo for the 17th Conference of the Parties (COP17) to the Convention on Biological Diversity, set to be held in Yerevan in October 2026. The emblem prominently features the Erivan Anomalous Blue butterfly (Polyommatus eriwanensis), a rare species found only in and around the Armenian capital, symbolising the country’s unique biodiversity and the fragility of ecosystems.
The butterfly was chosen because endemic species are highly sensitive to environmental change, making them strong indicators of ecosystem health. Butterflies in particular respond quickly to habitat loss, climate change, and ecological imbalance. By highlighting a local species with global significance, Armenia has connected international biodiversity goals with on-ground conservation realities.
The COP17 logo incorporates 23 blended colours, representing the 23 targets of the Kunming–Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework. This design reflects the idea that progress on biodiversity depends on collective and interconnected action rather than isolated efforts. The accompanying slogan, “Taking action for nature,” underscores the shift from commitments to implementation.
COP17 will be a landmark summit as it will host the first global review of how effectively countries are implementing the Kunming–Montreal framework, which focuses on habitat protection, species conservation, and reforming biodiversity-harming subsidies. Through its logo, Armenia has set a clear message: safeguarding nature requires urgent, coordinated, and measurable action.
