Who Is Known as the Father of Mobile Phones? Know About Martin Cooper

The title “Father of Mobile Phones” is given to Martin Cooper, an American engineer who revolutionised modern communication. While working at Motorola, Cooper made the world’s first handheld mobile phone call on April 3, 1973, proving that wireless communication could be truly personal and portable.

The Historic First Call

Standing on a street in New York City, Martin Cooper used a prototype mobile phone to call his rival Joel Engel of Bell Labs. This moment marked a turning point in the history of telecommunications.

The First Mobile Phone

The device Cooper used was the Motorola DynaTAC, a large and heavy phone weighing about 1.1 kg. It offered only 30 minutes of talk time and took nearly 10 hours to charge—earning it the nickname “The Brick.” Despite its limitations, it laid the foundation for today’s smartphones.

Recognition

For his groundbreaking contribution, Martin Cooper received prestigious honours including the Charles Stark Draper Prize and the Marconi Prize in 2013.

Today, every smartphone traces its origins back to Cooper’s invention—making him rightly remembered as the Father of Mobile Phones.
