In a rare moment of political consensus, Harivansh Narayan Singh was elected unopposed as the Deputy Chairman of the Rajya Sabha on April 17, 2026, securing his third consecutive term. This historic re-election makes him the first nominated member ever to hold the post, underlining his stature and cross-party respect in India’s parliamentary system.
The election, moved by Leader of the House J. P. Nadda, filled the vacancy created after the end of Harivansh’s previous term on April 9. The absence of any opposing candidate highlighted broad political agreement on his leadership and procedural expertise.
Leaders across party lines welcomed the decision. Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised Harivansh’s calm and impartial conduct of House proceedings, while Opposition Leader Mallikarjun Kharge also extended his congratulations.
A journalist-turned-politician and former editor of Prabhat Khabar, Harivansh is widely known for maintaining discipline, neutrality, and dignity in parliamentary debates. His unprecedented third term not only marks a personal milestone but also reflects the growing recognition of nominated members in key constitutional roles.
