India Welcomes Japan’s Defence Export Reform, Calls It Boost to Strategic Partnership

India has welcomed Japan’s decision to revise its defence export rules, calling it a significant step toward strengthening bilateral security cooperation. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) stated that the move will further deepen the India–Japan Special Strategic and Global Partnership, particularly in defence, technology, and manufacturing sectors.

Japan has updated its long-standing “Three Principles on Transfer of Defense Equipment and Technology,” easing restrictions on defence exports. The revised framework allows broader transfer of defence equipment and technology while maintaining strict oversight through case-by-case approvals and export controls. This marks a notable shift in Japan’s approach to global security and international collaboration.

India views this development as an opportunity to enhance joint capabilities, promote innovation, and expand cooperation between public and private sectors. According to MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal, the policy change will open new avenues for defence partnerships and strengthen strategic alignment between the two nations.

Japan’s evolving defence policy reflects its vision of building stronger partnerships in a complex geopolitical environment. Both India and Japan continue to play key roles in promoting stability and cooperation in the Indo-Pacific region, making this policy shift an important milestone in their growing relationship.
