Top 10 Most Polluted Cities in May 2026: Surprising Global AQI Rankings

Air pollution has become a growing global concern in 2026, with several unexpected cities recording dangerously high Air Quality Index (AQI) levels. From European coastal towns to major Asian cities, worsening air quality is affecting public health and daily life across regions.

According to recent AQI rankings, Cobh recorded the highest pollution level with an AQI of 208, followed by Dungarvan and Clonmel. In Asia, cities such as Kashgar, Bikaner, and Patna also reported unhealthy AQI levels.

Experts believe that weather stagnation, reduced wind flow, dust storms, vehicular emissions, and construction activities are major reasons behind the sudden rise in pollution. In desert regions like Bikaner and Abu Dhabi, dust particles significantly contribute to poor air quality.

Several Indian cities including Aurangabad, Begusarai, and Muzaffarpur have also entered unhealthy AQI categories due to rapid urbanization, traffic congestion, and industrial emissions.

Health experts warn that prolonged exposure to high AQI levels can lead to respiratory illnesses, throat irritation, eye discomfort, and cardiovascular diseases. The rising pollution trend highlights the urgent need for stronger environmental policies and sustainable urban planning worldwide.
