India is set to chair the Ninth Session of the Intergovernmental Group of Experts (IGE) on Consumer Protection Law and Policy, organized by the United Nations Trade and Development (UNCTAD), from 6–8 July 2026 at the Palais des Nations in Geneva, Switzerland. The three-day meeting will bring together policymakers, regulators, consumer protection authorities, and international organizations to discuss emerging consumer protection challenges and strengthen global cooperation.
The IGE serves as the principal international platform for implementing the United Nations Guidelines for Consumer Protection (UNGCP). It enables member states to exchange best practices, review consumer protection laws, address new market challenges, and enhance the enforcement of consumer rights across borders.
India’s delegation will be led by Nidhi Khare, Secretary, Department of Consumer Affairs, who will chair the session and facilitate discussions aimed at building global consensus on consumer protection policies. One of the key highlights of the meeting will be the launch of the UN Principles for Consumer Product Safety, adopted by the UN General Assembly in December 2025, which establish a global framework for product safety and regulatory cooperation.
India will also showcase its achievements in consumer protection, including the success of the National Consumer Helpline, which has resolved over 1.47 lakh refund-related grievances and facilitated refunds exceeding ₹91.77 crore. Additionally, India will present e-Jagriti, an AI-powered digital platform that enables online complaint filing, virtual hearings, digital case management, and efficient resolution of consumer disputes, including cross-border cases involving Non-Resident Indians (NRIs).
India’s role as Chair of the UNCTAD meeting reflects its growing leadership in global consumer policy and its commitment to promoting transparent, technology-driven, and accessible consumer justice systems worldwide.
