India and Japan have strengthened their Special Strategic and Global Partnership by unveiling a comprehensive roadmap covering economic security, artificial intelligence (AI), clean energy, critical minerals, and defence cooperation during Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi’s official visit to India on 2 July 2026.
The two leaders adopted three key bilateral documents—a Joint Declaration on Economic Security, a Joint Statement on Artificial Intelligence Cooperation, and a Joint Statement on Energy Resilience—to enhance collaboration in emerging technologies and strategic sectors.
Both countries also launched a Joint Roadmap on Economic Security, focusing on resilient supply chains for semiconductors, quantum technologies, advanced materials, and critical minerals. In AI, India and Japan agreed to promote responsible AI research, digital innovation, capacity building, and technology exchange between governments, academia, startups, and industries.
As part of their clean energy partnership, the two nations announced plans to establish around 1,000 biogas and organic fertiliser plants across India under the GOBARdhan initiative, supporting renewable energy, sustainable agriculture, and rural development.
The summit also reinforced defence cooperation through expanded naval exercises, enhanced maritime security, defence technology collaboration, and an early convening of the India-Japan 2+2 Ministerial Dialogue. Both leaders highlighted the alignment between India’s MAHASAGAR initiative and Japan’s Free and Open Indo-Pacific (FOIP) vision, reaffirming their shared commitment to a secure, resilient, and rules-based Indo-Pacific region.
