India and UK Launch Critical Minerals Supply Chain Observatory to Strengthen Resource Security

India and the United Kingdom have launched the Critical Minerals Global Supply Chain Observatory (GSCO), a joint initiative aimed at strengthening critical mineral supply chains and enhancing resource security. The observatory was inaugurated in New Delhi by Union Minister G. Kishan Reddy and UK Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper.

Critical minerals are essential for modern industries, including electric vehicles, renewable energy systems, semiconductors, defence technologies, and advanced electronics. As global demand for these resources continues to rise, ensuring secure and diversified supply chains has become a strategic priority for nations worldwide.

The GSCO will function as a data-driven platform that provides real-time market intelligence, supply chain monitoring, risk assessment, and analysis of geopolitical and market disruptions. It is expected to support evidence-based policymaking and help industries respond to emerging challenges in the critical minerals sector.

The initiative has been developed through collaboration between TEXMiN (Technology Innovation Hub on Mining), IIT (ISM) Dhanbad, and the University of Cambridge. It also aligns with India’s National Critical Mineral Mission (NCMM), which focuses on securing long-term access to minerals vital for future technologies and energy security.

The launch of the observatory marks a significant step in strengthening India-UK cooperation while supporting global efforts toward clean energy transitions and resilient supply chains.
