The Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) has placed India in its highest risk category—Category A—flagging the country as a major concern for doping violations in athletics. The move follows a steady rise in Anti-Doping Rule Violations (ADRVs), with India consistently ranking among the top nations globally between 2022 and 2025.
Recent data highlights the growing trend, with violations increasing year after year and placing India under heightened global scrutiny. Even domestic reports from the National Anti-Doping Agency indicate frequent violations among athletes, raising concerns about systemic gaps.
Being classified under Category A brings stricter compliance requirements, including expanded testing programs, closer monitoring of athletes, and stronger adherence to international anti-doping standards. Indian athletes participating in global competitions will now face more rigorous testing and oversight.
AIU Chair David Howman pointed out that India’s anti-doping framework has not kept pace with the scale of the issue, emphasizing the need for better enforcement and awareness programs.
In response, the Athletics Federation of India has acknowledged the concerns and pledged reforms, including enhanced testing, education initiatives, and stricter action against those involved in doping practices. This development underscores the urgent need for stronger measures to protect the integrity of Indian athletics on the global stage.
