India–Russia RELOS Pact Comes Into Force, Boosting Military Logistics Cooperation

By Soniya:

India and Russia have strengthened their strategic defence partnership with the operationalisation of the Reciprocal Exchange of Logistics Agreement (RELOS) in April 2026. Originally signed in 2025, the pact enables both nations to access each other’s military bases, ports and airfields, marking a significant step in enhancing operational cooperation.

Under the agreement, armed forces of both countries can avail logistical support, including refuelling, maintenance and deployment facilities. The pact allows limited deployment of troops, warships and aircraft, improving interoperability and enabling faster response during joint operations, exercises and humanitarian missions.

A key strategic advantage for India is expanded access to critical Russian locations, particularly in the Arctic region. Ports such as Murmansk and Severomorsk provide India with entry into emerging maritime routes and energy corridors, increasing its global strategic reach.

The RELOS pact reflects the deep-rooted defence ties between India and Russia, built over decades of cooperation in military technology, procurement and joint exercises. By institutionalising logistical support, the agreement enhances practical coordination and strengthens India’s position in global geopolitics.
