India’s First AI-Powered Orbital Data Centre Satellite ‘Pathfinder’ Announced by Pixxel and Sarvam

By Soniya:

Indian space-tech startup Pixxel, in collaboration with AI firm Sarvam, has announced Pathfinder—India’s first AI-powered orbital data centre satellite. Unveiled on May 3, 2026, the 200 kg-class demonstration satellite is scheduled for launch in the fourth quarter of 2026.

Pathfinder represents a major shift in satellite technology by enabling data processing directly in space. Unlike traditional satellites that transmit raw data to Earth, this orbital data centre will analyse information onboard, significantly reducing the time required to generate insights and improving efficiency.

Pixxel will handle the satellite’s design, manufacturing, launch, and operations, while Sarvam will provide the AI backbone, including advanced onboard models for real-time data processing and inference. The satellite will be equipped with high-performance Graphics Processing Units (GPUs) and Pixxel’s hyperspectral imaging camera, allowing it to capture and process detailed spectral data in orbit.

The satellite will be built at Pixxel’s Gigapixxel facility in India, designed for large-scale satellite production. Pathfinder also highlights the growing role of space-based computing, where data is processed closer to the source, minimizing delays and bandwidth requirements.

Overall, the mission marks a significant step for India in combining artificial intelligence with space technology, positioning the country at the forefront of next-generation satellite innovation.
