Mumbai Cricket Association Launches India’s First Structured Player Contract Model

By Soniya:

The Mumbai Cricket Association has created a landmark moment in Indian domestic cricket by becoming the first state association to introduce a structured player contract system, starting from the 2026–27 domestic season. Approved by the MCA Apex Council, the move is aimed at providing long-term financial security to domestic cricketers, particularly those who do not get opportunities in high-paying platforms like the Indian Premier League or the national team.

Under the new model, players will be offered annual contracts with a graded salary structure—Grade A (₹12–20 lakh), Grade B (₹8–12 lakh), and Grade C (₹8 lakh). The system rewards consistency and performance at the domestic level, reducing players’ dependence on external leagues for income. MCA President Ajinkya Naik highlighted that the initiative is designed to support committed domestic performers who often remain outside the IPL spotlight.

To ensure fairness, eligibility has been clearly defined. Players must be registered with MCA, meet fitness standards, not have represented India or played in the IPL in the previous two seasons, and be recommended by the selection committee. This ensures the scheme benefits genuine domestic talent rather than established stars.

Financially, the reform builds on MCA’s earlier decision to match match fees paid by the Board of Control for Cricket in India, where players earn ₹40,000–₹60,000 per day in tournaments like the Ranji Trophy. With the addition of annual contracts, domestic players’ overall earnings and stability are set to improve significantly.

The MCA’s decision is being seen as a potential model for other state associations, marking an important step toward strengthening the foundation of Indian domestic cricket.
