Why India Became Home to 97 of the World’s 100 Hottest Cities in 2026

India witnessed an unprecedented heatwave in 2026, with reports showing that 97 of the world’s 100 hottest cities were located in the country on a single day. Several cities across Uttar Pradesh, Odisha, Madhya Pradesh, and Rajasthan recorded extreme temperatures above 48°C, placing India at the center of growing global climate concerns.

The primary reason behind this intense heat is the formation of a “heat dome” — a high-pressure weather system that traps hot air over a large region. The trapped air becomes compressed and hotter over time, while clouds, rainfall, and cooler winds are blocked from entering the affected area. This leads to prolonged and dangerous heat conditions.

Meteorologists also noted that the weak presence of Western Disturbances in 2026 contributed significantly to the crisis. Normally, these weather systems originating from the Mediterranean bring rainfall and temporary cooling to northern India. Their absence allowed uninterrupted solar heating across the Indo-Gangetic plains.

Human activities have further intensified the heatwave. Deforestation, rapid urbanisation, shrinking water bodies, sand mining, and land degradation have reduced natural cooling mechanisms. Cities with extensive concrete infrastructure experience the “urban heat island” effect, where temperatures remain extremely high even during nighttime.

Experts warn that rising global temperatures linked to climate change are increasing the frequency and intensity of extreme heat events worldwide. The 2026 Indian heatwave has renewed calls for stronger climate adaptation measures, sustainable urban planning, groundwater conservation, afforestation, and heat-resilient infrastructure.

The extreme temperatures have also raised concerns over public health, water scarcity, crop losses, energy demand, and worker safety, particularly for vulnerable populations and outdoor labourers across India.
