Justice Aparesh Kumar Singh Appointed as Chief Justice of Telangana High Court

In a key development in India’s judicial appointments, Justice Aparesh Kumar Singh has been appointed as the new Chief Justice of the Telangana High Court. The Union Ministry of Law and Justice, after receiving approval from President Droupadi Murmu, officially notified the transfer on July 15, 2025.

Justice Singh was previously serving as the Chief Justice of the Tripura High Court, and his parent High Court is the Jharkhand High Court. His transfer follows a recommendation made by the Supreme Court Collegium, headed by Chief Justice of India B.R. Gavai, on May 26, 2025. The formal appointment comes 48 days after the recommendation.

Born on July 7, 1965, Justice Aparesh Kumar Singh earned his BA Honours and LLB from Delhi University, began practicing at the Patna High Court in 1990, and later shifted to the Jharkhand High Court in 2001. He was appointed as a Judge of the Jharkhand HC in January 2012, and also served as Acting Chief Justice and Executive Chairman of the Jharkhand State Legal Services Authority.

Other Judicial Transfers:

  • Justice Sujay Paul, the Acting Chief Justice of Telangana HC, has been transferred to the Calcutta High Court.
  • Justice Devanand, previously transferred from Andhra Pradesh High Court to Madras High Court, will now be repatriated to AP HC.
  • These transfers fall under Article 222 of the Indian Constitution, which deals with the transfer of High Court judges by the President on the recommendation of the Supreme Court Collegium.
  • The process reflects the independence of the judiciary, functioning of the collegium system, and the balance of powers in judicial appointments.
