Safeguarding Care Homes: Telangana Acts to Protect Women and Children

In Telangana, growing concerns about the safety of women and children in care institutions have prompted a major response from the government and civil society. A fact-finding team — including members from the Telangana State Women’s Commission, Tata Advanced Systems, and the NGO Enfold India — visited several child and women care homes to examine conditions on the ground.

Their aim was to understand the problems and suggest meaningful changes. The team met with officials and inspected institutions where complaints or concerns had been raised.

A report summarizing their findings was submitted on June 25. It was backed by key officials including Telangana DGP Ravi Gupta, Tata Advanced Systems’ Manish Handa, and Dr. Shaibya Saldanha of Enfold India. The report recommended stronger monitoring, legal action in serious cases, and better awareness about safety rights.

Following this, police officers have started visiting care centers to ensure proper conditions and prevent any form of abuse or neglect. New guidelines are also being prepared to improve safety and accountability in such institutions.

This initiative highlights the need for continued vigilance and action to protect society’s most vulnerable — especially children and women living under institutional care.
