India Forms National Crisis Management Committee for Stronger Disaster Response

In response to recent devastating floods and landslides across multiple Indian states, the Government of India has constituted the National Crisis Management Committee (NCMC) to enhance coordination and disaster response nationwide. The committee is established under Section 8A(2) of the Disaster Management Act, 2005, and will serve as the apex body for managing national-level disasters.

Chaired by the Cabinet Secretary, the NCMC includes top officials such as the Union Home Secretary, Defence Secretary, and representatives from the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA). It is empowered to assess national preparedness, issue directives, and coordinate efforts among central ministries, state governments, and disaster management authorities.

The move comes amid recent monsoon-triggered disasters in Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, Uttarakhand, and Manipur, which highlighted gaps in rapid and coordinated disaster response. The NCMC ensures that critical decisions can be made swiftly and that resources are efficiently mobilised during emergencies.

The committee’s creation marks a significant step in India’s effort to build a centralised, responsive, and resilient disaster management system.
