President Droupadi Murmu Becomes First Indian Head of State to Fly in Rafale Fighter Jet

In a landmark event for India’s defence history, President Droupadi Murmu on October 29, 2025, became the first President of India to fly in the Rafale fighter jet, taking off from the Ambala Air Force Station in Haryana. The 30-minute sortie marks a dual milestone — she is now the only Indian President to have flown in two frontline IAF fighter jets, the Rafale and the Sukhoi Su-30 MKI.

Historic Sortie Details

President Murmu flew in the twin-seater Rafale trainer variant alongside Group Captain Amit Gehani, Commanding Officer of the elite 17 Squadron (Golden Arrows). The sortie included standard combat manoeuvres that demonstrated the jet’s speed and agility.

As the Supreme Commander of the Indian Armed Forces, President Murmu’s participation underscores her active engagement with India’s defence forces, strengthening the bond between civilian leadership and the military.
