In November 2025, the Prime Minister of India visited Bhutan, marking a new milestone in the friendship between the two nations. The visit focused on boosting cooperation in energy, healthcare, culture, and border management — reinforcing India’s “Neighbourhood First” policy.
A key highlight was the inauguration of the 1020 MW Punatsangchhu-II Hydroelectric Project, a major step in enhancing Bhutan’s energy capacity and regional sustainability. India also announced the resumption of work on the 1200 MW Punatsangchhu-I project and extended a ₹4,000 crore Line of Credit for Bhutan’s infrastructure development.
Several MoUs were signed during the visit to strengthen collaboration in renewable energy, health, and mental health research, including a partnership between Bhutan’s PEMA Secretariat and India’s NIMHANS.
Other important announcements included land allocation in Varanasi for a Bhutanese temple and guest house, and the opening of a new immigration check post at Hatisar to improve cross-border connectivity.
The visit reaffirmed India and Bhutan’s deep strategic and developmental partnership, built on trust, mutual respect, and shared prosperity.
