Justice Vikram Nath has been appointed as the new Executive Chairman of the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA), strengthening India’s mission to ensure accessible and affordable justice for all. His appointment by the President highlights the government’s continuing efforts to expand legal aid support for vulnerable and economically weaker sections.
NALSA, established under the Legal Services Authorities Act, 1987, plays a crucial role in India’s justice framework by providing free and competent legal assistance to eligible citizens. With the Chief Justice of India serving as its Patron-in-Chief, the authority oversees a vast network of state, district, and local legal services bodies, enabling legal outreach across remote and marginalised regions.
Justice Vikram Nath’s leadership is expected to enhance coordination within this network and improve the reach of legal aid initiatives. NALSA’s core functions include offering free legal representation, organising Lok Adalats for efficient dispute resolution, conducting legal awareness campaigns, and promoting mediation and conciliation. These services significantly reduce the economic barriers to justice and ensure that constitutional rights remain within the reach of every citizen.
