National Constitution Day: Honouring India’s Democratic Foundation

National Constitution Day, also known as Samvidhan Divas, is observed every year on 26 November to mark the adoption of the Indian Constitution in 1949. The day celebrates the historic role of the Constituent Assembly and reinforces the significance of constitutional values that guide India’s democracy.

The Constitution of India, drafted under the leadership of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, was finalized after 2 years, 11 months, and 18 days of intense deliberations. While it was adopted on 26 November 1949, it came into full effect on 26 January 1950, when India became a Republic.

Constitution Day was officially declared by the Government of India in 2015, coinciding with the 125th birth anniversary year of Dr. Ambedkar. Before this, the day was observed informally as Law Day.

This observance encourages citizens to learn about their Fundamental Rights, Fundamental Duties, and the spirit of justice, liberty, equality, and fraternity that forms the core of the Indian Constitution. It is also a tribute to the visionary leaders who laid down the legal and social framework of a sovereign, democratic, and inclusive nation.

On this day, schools, institutions, and government bodies organize activities such as the reading of the Preamble, debates, and awareness programs—strengthening constitutional literacy across the country.

National Constitution Day serves as a reminder that democracy thrives when its citizens uphold the values and responsibilities enshrined in the Constitution.
